Lecturer in International Relations, University of Melbourne

Dr. Avery Poole

  • Avery Poole is a Lecturer in International Relations in the School of Social and Political Sciences. She was educated at The University of Melbourne (BA(Hons), BComm) and The University of British Columbia (MA, PhD). Her research explores institutional change in regional organisations, focusing on the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). She is particularly interested in normative contestation in relation to the establishment of the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights. Avery also examines Indonesia's role in ASEAN and its broader regional and global roles, and the evolution of Indonesian foreign policy. More broadly, she explores various topics in Asia Pacific regionalism and comparative regional analysis.

One candidate accuses the Australian Government of  “phobia”, the other of a “lack of trust”. As Avery Poole explains, the signals for Australia-Indonesia relations are not good, regardless of who wins on 9 July.
