FRESH FROM ousting Julia Gillard from the Prime Ministership, Kevin Rudd has annnounced plans to make it harder for the Labor Party to switch leaders.

The reform is aimed at taking power away from factional leaders and giving it to rank-and-file party members.

An Election Watch analysis has detemined Labor currently has fewer members than the Adelaide Crows and West Coast Eagles AFL clubs.

Former senior Labor Party official Nicholas Reece tells Cathy Harper the move could be a "shot in the arm" for the Labor Party.
